(ORDO NEWS) — Christo and Jeanne-Claude are famous artists who became famous for “packaging” various objects.
For example, the Reichstag, the Arc de Triomphe or entire islands! Alas, the couple passed away, but their projects continue to be realized.
It’s great when the legacy of artists continues to live after them
A plan is currently being developed to complete one more of the artists’ unrealized works. The team working on the project calls this work “the world‘s largest permanent work of contemporary art.”
The Mastaba was originally conceived by artists back in 1977. It resembles an ancient tomb in Egypt.
The sculpture is currently being planned for the desert region of Liwa, about 160 km south of Abu Dhabi, UAE. It will be the only permanent large-scale work by Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
The Mastaba will consist of 410,000 stacked steel barrels in different colors. All of them will create a mosaic inspired by traditional Islamic architecture.
The work of art will reach a height of 150 meters. It will be significantly taller than the iconic Pyramid of Giza, half the height of the Eiffel Tower and about the same height as two Boeing 747-8s stacked tail-to-back!
The project is still in the planning stages and the team of Christo and Jeanne-Claude is currently seeking government approval to move it forward.
If all goes according to plan, the construction will take at least three years and will be led by Christo’s nephew Vladimir Yavashev, who has worked with the artists for three decades.
