(ORDO NEWS) — Crowds of people gathered at La Rada Beach in Estepona to view and photograph the carcass.
José Luis Mons, of the Center for Marine Species Restoration, told The Olive Press: “Whales stranded here on the beach are not common, but unfortunately they do happen in some cases. Of course, most of the time the whales are already dead.”.
The center added that the female whale’s body is “in the process of decomposition” as she died a few days ago.
The Estepona Council has confirmed that a carcass extraction operation is currently underway.
Marine biologists and other experts will then perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
According to WWF, fin whales are the second largest mammal in the world after the blue whale.
They grow up to 80 feet in length and are an endangered species with 50,000 to 90,000 of these mammals worldwide.
