(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists at the University of Bologna decided to find out why some people can live for more than 100 years. To establish the cause of longevity, they studied 81 centenarians. All people are residents of the Italian peninsula.
This is reported by the scientific journal eLife.
The aging process is a common mechanism for all people and wildlife. Therefore, the researchers compared the genes of men and women of different ages. We compared skin samples of residents of the peninsula at the age of 105, 68, 60, etc. The comparison was carried out among 333 Italians over 100 years old and 358 people over 60 years old.
The study showed that centenarians have several changes in their genome. They are associated with the COA1 and STK17A genes.
According to the results of the study, it is clear that the DNA repair mechanism and weak mutation in these genes are the central mechanisms responsible for longevity. Also, their slight change reduces the risk of chronic age-related diseases.
The author of the scientific study, Claudio Franceschi, is sure that such a long life span is at the genetic level.
Perhaps the results will help medicine in the fight against dementia, Parkinson’s syndrome and other diseases common to the elderly.
