(ORDO NEWS) — Experts recently discovered that sea sponges can produce their own nutrients.
Sea sponges are inhabited by bacteria that produce various compounds. This has been known to scientists for a long time.
Recently, it turned out that the sponges themselves are capable of creating one useful group of compounds. The results of this study were presented on March 20, 2022 at a meeting of the American Chemical Society.
Sponges can independently produce special molecules – terpenes. Genetic analysis by Kayla Wilson, Ph.D., has shown that sponges are able to create biologically active molecules that are beneficial to human health.
Terpenes that are derived from sponges are unique in that they contain nitrogen. They are also, according to the results of scientific studies, can help in the treatment of malaria .
Also Ph.D. Vikram Shende, together with laboratory students Vivian Lin and Samantha Hanauer, was able to extract new compounds from 13 San Diegan sea sponges.
These substances (brominated peptides) are able to inhibit the growth of bacteria. Now experts are studying whether the resulting compounds can be used as antibiotics.
