(ORDO NEWS) — “One moment,” someone tells us when they ask us to wait for a short period of time.
But does this “one moment” have a specific numerical expression, or is it just a conventional name?
The term moment dates back to the eighth century, when Bede the Venerable, a Benedictine monk in the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria, introduced it to define a time period of 90 seconds. This is perhaps longer than most people consider a moment…
Modern scientists have decided to correct the situation in such a way that the moment really becomes something of a short duration that we are all used to.
The authors of the study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology specified that the moment is the minimum duration of any experience, as a result of which we are able to capture information that is significant to us.
In 2014, scientists experimentally found that the brain of an average person is able to recognize patterns in just 13 milliseconds (one millisecond is 1,000 times less than a second). So the moment received a specific numerical value of 13 milliseconds.
