(ORDO NEWS) — If you have a cat or a dog, you must have wondered “I wonder what she’s thinking about?”. Unfortunately, the technology for reading minds still does not exist, and scientists can only talk about the thoughts of pets in general terms.
So, in 2019, it was found that cats perceive their owners as their parents. It is impossible to read the minds of animals, but we can see the world as they see it.
Scientists have long known how the eyes of animals and humans differ – the difference lies in different focusing, susceptibility to colors, viewing angle and several other factors.
Based on known data about the structure of the eyes of dogs, cats and other animals, specialists from the My Vision organization showed in photographs what the world looks like through the eyes of animals. We think everyone should take a look at it – it’s educational.
How dogs see – features of dog vision
The most important part of the eye is the retina – this is the inner shell of the organs of vision, in which the receptors for the perception of light, shadow and colors are located.
In dogs, the retina is conditionally divided into two parts: the upper part allows you to see well in the dark, and the lower part provides good vision during the day – it is equipped with a kind of filter that delays bright light.
The visual apparatus of dogs is designed in such a way that their visual acuity is lower than that of humans. But this minus gives them one advantage – they see the world much wider than we do – by as much as 240 degrees.
Objects that are at a distance of less than 30 centimeters, dogs see blurry, and are guided by smells. But with a range of vision, everything is fine with them, and they can notice a running person even from a distance of 400 meters.
It is believed that dogs see the world in black and white. This is not entirely true – they really have few color-sensitive cells, but they pick up purple, blue and yellow colors, and also distinguish between shades of gray.
How cats see mice
There are many similarities between the vision of dogs and cats. These fluffy creatures have excellent vision from afar – they can spot a moving object at a distance of up to 500 meters.
They are sensitive to moving objects, making it easy to catch mice. But they are not attracted to fixed points, which saves the lives of mice that are able to play dead.
Cats can’t see well at close range. This is due to the poor development of the ciliary muscle, which is responsible for fast focusing from distant objects to near ones. But felines can see in the dark just as well as humans during the day. Night vision in cats is 6 times better than in humans.
Cats, like dogs, cannot boast of an abundance of photoreceptors. They mainly see blues and greens, black and white, and about 25 shades of grey. Cats do not recognize warm shades well, that is, they are not attracted to red, brown, yellow and orange things.
How goldfish see – where does the “fisheye”
Scientists believe that fish see the same colors as humans. But their eyes are located on different sides of the body, which is why their vision of the world is very different from ours – their angle of view is 360 degrees. That is, they constantly see the entire aquarium in which they live.
Another feature of the vision of fish is a multiple increase in the objects in front of them. Thanks to this, they can easily see the food floating in the water and eat it. Take a look at the image below and see why one of the filters on your smartphone camera is called a fisheye.
How rats see – animals with the best scent
Rats see their environment in grays, blues, and greens they also have very few color-perceiving cells. Like fish, rats’ eyes are located on different sides of the face, so they have panoramic vision. It is also known that their organs of vision can move independently of each other.
That is, if desired, rodents can look forward and at the floor at the same time. But such a need is unlikely to arise often – most of all they rely on their scent.
How flies see – why are they so fast
In movies and cartoons, we are often shown that flies see the world as a hexagonal image. In fact, this is just an artistic trick – they see the world as very blurry and as if made up of pixels. In terms of color perception, they are doing well, in this they are no worse than people.
What works 100% for them is the visual response. When you swing a slipper, the fly immediately notices this and flies away – that’s why it is so difficult to swat them.
How eagles see – the best hunters
About attentive people, they often say “look like an eagle.” So do these winged predators really have such good eyesight? Everything is just like that.
Scientists believe that eagles can see 8 times farther than humans. This ability helps them to effectively hunt any animals – they can notice and catch even a small mouse. On top of that, they see more colors than humans. What we see, the eagles seem even brighter.
In the image above, the rat hiding behind the flower pot is highlighted in purple. So the artist depicted the ability of eagles to see ultraviolet radiation – they can track prey by the trail of their urine.
