Holy fire in Jerusalem will descend without pilgrims

US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — On Holy Saturday in the Jerusalem Church of the Resurrection of Christ (Church of the Holy Sepulcher) a ceremony of the descent of the Holy Fire will take place, but without pilgrims because of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry , the ceremony will be held on April 18 without the presence of pilgrims. About 10 people will participate in it. Broadcast from the Church of the Holy Sepulcher will be conducted to the whole world.

It is noted that a number of countries intend to send aircraft in order to receive the Holy Fire.

After the ceremony, the fire will be delivered by representatives of the Greek Orthodox Church to the Jaffa Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem, after which representatives of the embassies will deliver fire to Ben Gurion Airport.

Church of the Holy Sepulcher – the main shrine of the Christian world was closed on March 25 due to the situation with the coronavirus.

It is believed that he stands on the very spot where he was crucified, buried, and then Jesus Christ was resurrected. This place was discovered by the envoys of the Roman emperor Constantine three centuries after the crucifixion. Every year on Holy Saturday (this year, April 18), on the eve of Orthodox Easter, the miracle of the descent of the Holy Fire takes place there.
