(ORDO NEWS) — It has been expanding for more than 20,000 years in a row. Researchers do not see any danger to humans in such valleys.
In 2021, researchers from the British Antarctic Survey discovered a strange tunnel under the bottom of the North Sea.
Now scientists have managed to create a three-dimensional map of the area and tell how a “cache” was formed under cold water.
There was an ancient ice sheet under the North Sea. Global warming has formed on the spot several warm currents that have been “honing” huge cavities in the underground ice for centuries.
Scientists believe that the found valley has been forming and expanding for more than 20,000 years in a row.
Tunnel valleys are massive underground ravines that were cut into the ancient seafloor by meltwater that flowed into channels under the ice sheets.
Such valleys can be up to 150 km long, 6 km wide and 0.5 km deep.
3D seismic reflection technology was used to create the 3D map, which emits sound waves to scan the seafloor.
Researchers do not see any danger to humans in such valleys. The discovery will allow a better understanding of how the Earth will change after global warming.
