US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Hackers hacked supercomputers for cryptocurrency mining. Several machines across Europe were infected with malware.
It is reported that incidents occurred in the UK, Germany, Switzerland and Spain. First, the problem was reported by the University of Edinburgh, which has a supercomputer ARCHER. The organization said it has closed the ARCHER system to investigate the incident.
The organization BwHPC also spoke about stopping access to five computing clusters in Germany. Then a number of organizations reported a similar problem.
Experts said that attackers gained access to supercomputers through compromised SSH keys. The data was reportedly stolen from university employees in Canada, China and Poland, who had access to supercomputers.
Experts believe that the attacks were carried out by one hacker group.
