(ORDO NEWS) — Google’s highly publicized new chatbot tool Bard, which is not yet available to the general public, has already caused controversy due to an inaccurate answer during a demonstration of its capabilities.
In a demo posted by Google on Twitter, a user asks Bard, “What new discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope can I tell my 9-year-old about?”
Bard responds with a series of points, including the following: “JWST took the very first pictures of a planet outside the solar system.”
However, according to NASA, the first image showing an exoplanet (or any planet outside the solar system) was actually taken in 2004 by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope.
As soon as Reuters reported the chatbot’s inaccurate response, shares in Google’s parent company Alphabet fell eight percent, worth roughly $140 billion.
Bard’s mistake highlights an existing problem for Google as it rushes to integrate the same artificial intelligence technology that powers Microsoft ChatGPT into its search engine.
Experts believe that by such hasty actions, Google risks undermining the reputation of its search engine for providing inaccurate information.
Bard, like ChatGPT, is built on a large language model that is trained on vast amounts of data on the web to generate reliable responses to user queries. Experts have long warned that these tools can spread inaccurate information.
Previously, Google introduced Bard as the main competitor to ChatGPT, which was used to create essays, lyrics, and answer questions.
Moreover, the chat bot ChatGPT took all the information from Google. ChatGPT’s rapid rise in popularity reportedly prompted Google to announce its search product.
