(ORDO NEWS) — Google has announced that it contributes to the ranking of search results. Some of the improvements affect all types of requests.
Others are more specialized and designed to improve the results of specific queries and types of information. In particular, product presentations.
“Some of the improvements we are making are global in nature and affect all types of requests. Others are more specialized and designed to improve the results of more specific queries and types of information,” said Google’s Perry Liu in a blog post. He lists several criteria for merchants that Liu says the company will monitor:
- Include useful details, such as advantages or disadvantages, how the product works, or how the product differs from previous versions.
- Post testimonials from people who have actually used the products and show how the item looks or how to use it.
- Include unique information beyond what the manufacturer provides, such as visuals, audio, or links to other content that details the reviewer’s experience.
- Tell about comparable products or explain what makes the product different from competitors’ offerings.
Announced on March 23, the updates will roll out “over the next few weeks” and “may affect English-language product review rankings on many sites,” Google said in a separate post. The company also plans to “open support for product reviews in other languages” in the future.
The updates come amid criticism that Google search results are no longer as useful as they used to be.
We’ll have to wait and see if these changes to product reviews make it easier to find quality reviews, but it looks like they could be at least a small step in the right direction.
