(ORDO NEWS) — The ExoMars Trace Gas (TGO) orbiter, cruising over Mars, has discovered a very unusual crater resembling a felled tree trunk.
The recently released image was captured by the ExoMars Trace Gas orbiter, a joint mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Russian space agency Roscosmos.
Just like tree rings, the details inside the crater contain important information about the Red Planet. The interior of the crater is filled with sediments that are likely rich in water ice, scientists say.
“Just as tree rings provide snapshots of Earth‘s past climate, the patterns inside this ice-rich crater reveal details of Mars’ history,” the ExoMars orbiter’s team of scientists tweeted.
