(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists have long been wondering about the maximum possible size of black holes. So far, the theory is based only on observations: the largest object reaches 66 solar masses.
Experts want to find out whether the weight of black holes is hundreds of billions of times the mass of the Sun. Until now, scientists have thought about this issue but did not try to put an end to it once and for all.
At the center of every galaxy is a supermassive black hole, which was formed by the merging of smaller objects and the absorption of matter. According to Florian Kuehnel of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, the current theory fails to explain how huge black holes were formed in the early stages of the universe.
Bernard Carr, who works at the Queen Mary University of London, believes that huge black holes could have originated in a few seconds after the Big Bang due to random density fluctuations in a hot Universe that was expanding rapidly. In this way, concentrated pockets of matter could arise, which were enough to transform into black holes.
Later, only these objects were merged.
Studying black holes will help to finally find out what dark matter is. This substance cannot be seen, it can be studied only through the behavior of other objects that are influenced.
Experts at the University of Amsterdam are wondering if small black holes could have formed antimatter. To find out, the first step is to find colossal large objects using gravitational lensing. It takes time to understand the formation processes of the Universe and the nature of dark matter.
