(ORDO NEWS) — This week, the European Space Agency (ESA) released 5 minutes of haunting crackling audio revealing what the Earth‘s magnetic field sounds like.
Earth’s internal magnetism, called the magnetosphere, generates a comet-shaped field. around the surface of the planet, which provides protection from harmful solar and cosmic particle radiation, as well as atmospheric erosion by the solar wind, believeNASA.
Researchers at the Technical University of Denmark have taken magnetic signals measured by ESA’s Swarm magnetic field research satellite and converted them into sound.
The resulting 5-minute audio includes eerie squeaks and crackling sounds, as well as deep breathing-like sounds that listeners on social media have described as “numb” and “bizarre spinal tingles.”
Since the opening was announced on October 24, loudspeakers in Solbjerg Square in Copenhagen, Denmark, have broadcast the recording three times a day. It is planned to continue playing it every day at 8:00, 13:00 and 19:00 until October 30th.
“We got access to a very interesting sound system consisting of more than 30 speakers dug into the ground on Solbjerg Square in Copenhagen,” musician and project supporter Klaus Nielsen from the Technical University of Denmark told ESA about the live installation of the recording.
“The rumble of the Earth’s magnetic field is accompanied by an image of a geomagnetic storm resulting from a solar flare on November 3, 2011, and it really sounds quite scary,” Nielsen added.
Representatives from the European Space Agency and the Technical University of Denmark did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.
