(ORDO NEWS) — Just a year ago, off the northern coast of Greenland, a team of Greenlandic, Danish and Swiss explorers discovered a new island, which immediately received the status of “northernmost”. However, today it turned out that this is far from being an island.
It’s funny that the land found was called Qeqertaq Avannarleq, which means “the northernmost island” in the local language. It turned out that scientists hurried with such a name.
In 2022, a new expedition set off for the “island”. GPS and laser scanning data showed that the researchers actually found an iceberg stuck on the bottom. It may have once been part of a larger glacier.
Outwardly, it is very easy to confuse an iceberg with an island – its surface consists of earth and pebbles. Scientists believe that the iceberg acquired such a “land” as a result of numerous landslides.
Interestingly, the rest of the elusive “ghost islands” found in the region since 1978 also turned out to be fake. All of them were actually icebergs.
