(ORDO NEWS) — Humans are the only intelligent and self-aware beings on Earth. At least that’s what official science says. However, many experts believe that the development of intelligent machines could lead to dramatic changes.
According to James Lovelock, a British futurist, cyborgs will build their own world, and humanity may disappear from our planet.
According to Lovelock, author of the new book Novatzen, self-sufficient and self-aware cyborgs will be the descendants of modern robots and artificial intelligence systems.
The Briton predicts the advent of a new era in which the Earth will be controlled by machines.
However, his predictions do not involve a bloody war between humans and intelligent robots, nor a merger between humans and machines.
James Lovelock looks at this problem from a biological point of view – today’s computers can already process data much faster than us, and future machines will be even better and become millions of times smarter than humans.
Ultimately, cyborgs will surpass us intellectually and create their own world in which man will be reduced to a subordinate role and perhaps even redundant.
James Lovelock believes that cyborgs can transform the Earth, making it more friendly to them. However, it is unknown if the new world will still be friendly to humans.
Lovelock envisions cyborgs filling every evolutionary niche on the planet. “I think of cyborgs as another realm of life,” he says. “They will treat us in much the same way that we ourselves, as an animal kingdom, treat plants.”
What will cyborgs look like? Lovelock is intentionally vague because he expects them to rethink basic design rules in a way that we puny humans can’t possibly imagine.
“Cyborgs will start over; like Alpha Zero, they will start from scratch,” he writes in his book. He suggests they might look like spheres, though when pressed he said “It’s possible they wouldn’t have a shape at all”, existing mostly as virtual shapes inside computers.
It is also unknown how our human civilization will end – whether it will be weak and unable to adapt to changes, or whether it will simply be destroyed by machines.
A British futurologist predicts that the advent of the cyborg era will be the last stage of life on Earth, which could take a billion years.
When conditions on Earth become unfavorable for the survival of synthetic life, machines will migrate and populate another planet.
