France withdraws troops from Iraq due to coronavirus

US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — France, before a new decree, is withdrawing its troops from Iraq due to the spread of the coronavirus, the Figaro newspaper reported on Thursday night, citing a statement by the French General Staff.

On Wednesday, the withdrawal of the French military contingent from Iraq was reported by the Iraqi military command.

“In cooperation with the Iraqi government, the coalition decided to adjust its presence in Iraq and temporarily suspend its training of Iraqi security forces, especially in view of the health crisis,” the general staff communiqué quoted the newspaper as saying.

Thus, “France has decided, prior to a new order, to take out the Chammal troops stationed in Iraq.”

The withdrawal of troops will begin on March 26.

Coronavirus has already been detected in more than 170 countries. According to the latest data from the World Health Organization, the total number of infected has exceeded 350 thousand people, 16 thousand have died.

In Russia, 658 people were infected with the COVID-19 virus, 29 of them recovered.
