(ORDO NEWS) — In 1972, experts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology predicted that civilization would collapse in the middle of the 21st century as people try to improve the state of the economy. At the same time, they do not take into account how badly they harm the environment. The latest study showed that scientists of the last century were right, but their predictions may come true much earlier.
Reported by the Yale Journal of Industrial Ecology.
KPMG has created a special computer model with which you can see the development of the world since 1972. During the study, 10 different key variables were simultaneously taken into account at once. These include the development of industry, the size of humanity, and the impact on the environment. They found that in ten years there will be a noticeable slowdown in economic development. Around 2040, there will be a social collapse.
In 1972, experts took into account a fairly long period of time, 1900-2060. The study showed that starting in 2000, the population will begin to decline, and there will be fewer resources. At the same time, more and more hazardous substances will be released into the air. The tipping point was supposed to come in 2020. If no measures are taken in the near future, the collapse of civilization cannot be avoided.
The new study used a modified version of the old model. In the 70s of the last century, two scenarios were considered. Both of them indicate that economic growth will stop shortly.
