(ORDO NEWS) — The object has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2014. Every year, various archaeological works are carried out there, including restoration, research and cleaning. Thanks to this, scientists regularly make various discoveries.
So, a year ago, a project to restore the ancient canal was launched on the ruins of Pergamum. As part of the ongoing work, specialists managed to find fragments of fortress walls dating back to the 2nd century BC. However, a recent find may be even older, reaching around 2,500 years.
“The walls we have reached demonstrate social and economic strength. The stronger you make the walls, the stronger the city will be, ”Planet Today quotes researchers.
According to the assumptions of archaeologists, the fortress walls could reach the ancient river Selinos. At the same time, they served as excellent protection for the inhabitants, since they reached about 4-5 meters in length.
