US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Two tourists from China, who became the first patients in Italy who were diagnosed with a new type of coronavirus, were discharged from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani in Rome on Thursday, the head doctor of this medical institution, Francesco Vaya, told reporters.
“This is good news, which is the basis for pride for all medical workers in Italy,” he said on the television channel Sky.
In January, an elderly couple arrived in Milan from the Chinese city of Wuhan (Hubei Province), where an outbreak of unknown pneumonia was reported, which the Chinese authorities informed the World Health Organization on December 31, 2019.
Chinese tourists from Milan arrived in Rome at the end of January, felt unwell and were hospitalized at the Lazzaro Spallanzani Institute, where they were diagnosed with coronavirus.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte held a special press conference on January 30, at which he announced the first case of coronavirus infection on the Apennines. At the same time, the head of the Italian Ministry of Health, Roberto Speranza, signed an order to terminate air communications with China.
Already on January 31, the Italian Council of Ministers decided to introduce a state of emergency in the country for six months in connection with the spread of coronavirus and allocated 5 million euros to provide it.
For more than a month and a half, the Chinese couple remained undergoing treatment at the Lazzaro Spallanzani Institute. In the beginning, their condition was estimated by Italian experts as very serious. Both foreigners were placed in the intensive care unit.
Only on February 21, a coronavirus test in a man for the first time gave a negative result. On February 26, a similar result was obtained during the testing of a woman. However, doctors continued to treat Chinese patients.
According to Vaya, having discharged from the Institute of Infectious Diseases, the Chinese couple will remain in Italy for some time. “They will be transferred to the Roman hospital San Filippo Neri to complete the neuromotor rehabilitation of a woman,” the doctor said.
Italy ranks first in Europe for the spread of coronavirus. According to official figures released on Thursday evening by the head of the National Civil Defense Service, Angelo Borrelli, currently over 41 thousand cases of infection with a new type of virus have been recorded on the Apennines, 4440 patients have recovered, the number of victims has reached 3405 people.
