US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — The commander of the Libyan National Army, Khalifa Haftar, announced the severance of the so-called Shirat Agreement, which resulted in the formation of the Government of the national consent of the country, and the adoption of state governance.
“The general command of the armed forces takes over the leadership of the country. Despite the heavy burden of responsibility, we accept the will of the people and the mandate delegated to them,” he said in a video message to the nation.
The field marshal also promised that the Libyan National Army will work on the formation of civilian state institutions.
“People should be masters of their destiny and choose their future through democracy,” he stressed, indicating that his goal is to protect the will of the Libyans.
After the assassination of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, dual power was established in the country: in the east, parliament and the Libyan national army, led by Haftar, in the west, in the capital Tripoli, are the UN-supported Government of National Accord led by Fayez Sarraj.
The Government of National Accord was created in Libya in 2015 following the results of the inter-Libyan negotiations held in the Moroccan city of Shirat, recalls RIA News . The document was supposed to contribute to a political settlement in the country, however, these decisions were never implemented.
