(ORDO NEWS) — The agency explained such a drastic step as a response to the “discrimination” of Russian media and resources in this social network.
The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Communications has decided to block Facebook in Russia.
As noted in the department, this step was taken as a response to restricting access to Russian media accounts and resources: since October 2020, 26 such cases of “discrimination” have been identified.
“In recent days, the social network has limited access to the accounts of the Zvezda TV channel, the RIA Novosti news agency, Sputnik, Russia Today, the Lenta.ru and Gazeta.ru information resources,” the RKN recalled.
Meanwhile, Russia has Federal Law 272-FZ “On measures to influence persons involved in violations of fundamental human rights and freedoms, the rights and freedoms of citizens of the Russian Federation”, which, among other things, prohibits “violations of the key principles of the free dissemination of information and unhindered access of Russian users to Russian media on foreign Internet platforms”.
Facebook traffic began to slow down on February 25, a day after Vladimir Putin announced a military operation on the territory of Ukraine, and the West began to impose large-scale anti-Russian sanctions.
