US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Facebook found the remote work experiment during the pandemic a success – the company intends to transfer up to 50% of staff to permanent work from home within ten years. But salaries of remote employees may decline, Zuckerberg warned.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that in about five to ten years, about half of the company’s employees will work remotely, Bloomberg said. They aren’t the only company to find success with employees working from home — many smaller businesses are also getting virtual facilitation training to help them adjust to a structure that will allow for more remote work.
In the near future, Facebook will “aggressively” increase the attraction of new employees for remote work, the billionaire said (state, according to Forbes Real-Time, $ 85.2 billion) during a video conference with employees on Thursday. “The vast majority of people in the company still work remotely, so limiting yourself only to hiring people who live near an office that is not open in any case is not effective,” Zuckerberg said.
He explained that at the initial stage, the company will hire remote jobs mainly for the position of senior engineers and only in those US cities where there are no company offices. Employees working in these particular roles will be supported through remote work programs to ensure that they still gain access to the corporate mentoring provisions offered by Facebook.
He noted that the salaries of employees working from home will depend on where they live. “This means that if you live in a place where the cost of living is much lower or the cost of labor is lower, then the salary in these places is usually slightly lower,” Zuckerberg explained.
He asked employees who work remotely before January 1, 2021 to notify the company if they move to another region so that their salaries can be adjusted to their new location. This is necessary, including for the payment of taxes, said Zuckerberg. And he stressed: “For people who are not honest on this issue, there will be serious consequences.”
Zuckerberg also concluded that in the next five to ten years, “remote workers” could account for up to 50% of Facebook’s workforce. He told The Verge that almost 40% of the company’s employees have already expressed a desire to work from home.
According to Zuckerberg, he previously feared that the transition to working remotely would lead to a sharp drop in employee productivity, but it turned out that this was not so and, on the contrary, some employees became even more productive. Zuckerberg told the newspaper The Wall Street Journal, that current employees of the company will be able to continue to work in a remote format after the end of the pandemic, as long as they demonstrate high levels of performance.
