(ORDO NEWS) — San Cristobal Volcano, the highest and most active mountain in Nicaragua (northwest), registered this Sunday an explosion of gases and ash up to 1,500 meters high, which spread to three neighboring communities.

During the explosion, “the column of ash reached a height of 1,500 meters above the (crater) of the volcano, which, due to the influence of the wind,” reached “a small layer of ash from the settlements of Las Grecias 3, Las Grecias 4 and the city of El Viejo,” the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (Ineter).

However, the activity of the volcano was “moderate intensity” and did not cause serious damage to nearby cities, the report said.

San Cristobal, 1,745 meters high, is located in the department of Chinandega and is part of the volcanic chain of the Pacific region of Nicaragua.

During the volcanic eruption, “volcanic tremor and real-time seismic amplitude (RSAM)” showed an “increase”, which later returned “to their usual values”, according to Ineter.

The organization believes that the increase in volcanic activity in San Cristobal is “part of its normal behavior” at the moment, and does not rule out that “more explosions of similar or lesser intensity than those recorded” this Sunday may occur.

When the eruption of the San Cristobal volcano is strong, it usually affects the municipalities of Chichigalpa, Corinto, El Realejo, El Viejo and Chinandega (the capital of the department of the same name).

In total, there are 28 volcanoes in Nicaragua, seven of which are active. The San Cristobal Volcano is located 95 miles northwest of Managua.
