(ORDO NEWS) — For a long time, specialists from Norway could not understand who left the pencil inscription “kan kun være malet af en gal mand”, which means “only a madman could draw,” on the painting “The Scream”. In the end, everyone agreed that it was Edvard Munch himself.
It is quite difficult to see the phrase on the well-known frightening canvas due to its small size. Some experts immediately assumed that the phrase was left by an artist who suffered from mental disorders. Other art critics agreed on the hooliganism of a visitor to the National Gallery of Norway.
Infrared scanning made it possible to finally close the issue. So, the handwriting turned out to be the same as in Munch’s personal diary. The inscription appeared after the presentation of the painting in front of medical students, one of whom, named Johan Scharffenberg, said about the possible mental disorder of the author of the canvas.
The artist was upset because there were unhealthy people in his family. He was afraid that the same fate awaited him. The father and older sister battled depression, while the younger sister and mother died of tuberculosis. The sister was also taken to hospital with bipolar disorder.
Note that the painting “The Scream” was first presented in Oslo and became a visual manifestation of anxiety.
