(ORDO NEWS) — Experts have warned of the potential impact of advanced AI systems that could generate realistic fake news at unprecedented levels as the 2024 US presidential election approaches.
“It’s hard to imagine how AI-generated disinformation won’t become a major force in the next election,” the expert says.
ElevenLabs’ voice cloning software and OpenAI’s photorealistic photography DALL-E 2, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney could potentially be used for disinformation, according to a Fortune magazine report.
“We should be scared to death of the threats that the huge language models that underlie technology pose to us,” said AI expert and cognitive science professor Gary Markus of New York University.
“It’s hard to imagine how AI-generated disinformation won’t be a major force in the next election.”
While the technology for creating movies from text clues is still in its infancy, deep forgery experts can create convincing fake videos.
Expert Chris Meserall of the Brookings Institution warns that voice clones could play a significant role in the 2024 election, allowing audio clips to pop up at crucial moments in an election posing as a recording of a candidate saying something scandalous.
Some researchers believe that these technologies can determine when a piece of material contains a factual statement and estimate the likelihood of misinformation based on the feelings it conveys.
These technologies can undermine trust and confuse people into questioning the accuracy of information provided by experts and social connections, experts say.
The scenario will require further research to combat the spread of machine-generated misinformation.
