US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — The European Union believes that the unilateral actions of the commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar will not contribute to a settlement in this country, said Peter Stano, spokesman for the European Commission.
Haftar on Monday announced the withdrawal from the political agreement concluded in Morocco in 2015 under the auspices of the UN . He also said that power in the country is transferred to the army.
“Unilateral actions, even forceful ones, will not contribute to a lasting settlement in this country, such attempts are unacceptable,” the representative of the European Commission said.
He stressed that the agreement concluded in December 2015 under the auspices of the UN remains valid for a political solution, any changes can only be adopted as a result of the inter-Libyan dialogue. The representative of the European Commission explained that so far no alternative has been found for this agreement, therefore, proposals for a further settlement in Libya should come within the framework of the current document.
“We call on all actors, all who have influence on these parties, to increase pressure so that they stop hostilities and begin to search for a political solution. This is necessary for the country and its people,” said Stano.
For more than a year, Haftar has been attacking the Libyan capital Tripoli , which continues to be controlled by the internationally recognized community, the Government of National Accord (PNS).
The creation of the Libyan PNS became possible after the signing of the so-called Shirat Agreements in 2015 – following the results of inter-Libyan negotiations in the Moroccan city of Shirat. The document was supposed to lay the foundations of a political settlement in the country, but these decisions were never implemented.
