(ORDO NEWS) — In late spring 2022, NASA engineers discovered that the Voyager 1 space probe was sending incorrect telemetry from its Attitude Control System (AACS), which helps maintain Voyager 1’s orientation in space.
The crash has been fixed, but the source that caused the error has not been identified.
To find the cause of the distortion, engineers sifted through a huge amount of documentation from a space probe that was sent into space half a century ago.
The cause was a faulty on-board computer that had stopped working many years ago. The fact is that AACS began to send telemetry data through it.
Engineers instructed AACS to resume sending data to the correct computer, after which the error was fixed.
However, it is not completely clear why the problem occurred on the spacecraft.
Engineers will continue to work, but they don’t believe the faulty computer poses a significant long-term hazard to the Voyager 1 probe.
At the moment, the Voyager 1 probe is located at a distance of about 23.8 billion kilometers from Earth and continues to communicate with NASA.
