US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — The Queen of Great Britain, Elizabeth II, thanked the British, who observe quarantine, thus helping to combat the outbreak caused by the new coronavirus. The monarch said this on Sunday in a special televised address to the nation, expressing confidence that together the British will be able to defeat this disease.
“I want to thank those of you who stay at home to help protect the vulnerable,” the monarch said. “Together we are coping with this disease, and I want to assure you that if we remain united and unwavering, we will defeat it,” the head of state said in a letter that lasted a little over four minutes.
“I hope that in the future everyone will be proud of how they answered the challenge we are facing,” said the Queen. “Those who will live after us will be able to say that this generation of Britons was not weaker than the previous ones. What are the qualities of people “like endurance, a calm life-affirming determination and a sense of camaraderie, are still characteristic of the country in which we live.”
The British monarch makes a televised address to the British every Christmas, but on any other occasions they are extremely rare. Previously, Elizabeth II only spoke to the nation three times during crises and mournful events: in 2002 after the death of the Queen Mother, in 1997 before the funeral of Princess Diana, and also in 1991 during the Persian Gulf War. Only once was an appeal to the British people outside school hours made for a joyful occasion – during the 60th anniversary of the accession of Elizabeth II to the British throne, celebrated in 2012.
An appeal from Her Majesty, who will turn 94 this month, was recorded subject to all possible precautions. In the same room with the queen, the operator was only allowed to be dressed in a protective suit. All other participants in the process were in the next room.
Earlier, the source of the newspaper The Sunday Times called the Queen’s speech a “trump card”, which the government decided to play in order to raise the level of civil liability. The government fears that many Britons will want to take advantage of the good weather and leave their homes, violating the quarantine introduced on March 23. People are not allowed to leave home unless absolutely necessary. According to the latest data, the number of patients with coronavirus who died in the UK per day increased by 621, reaching 4,934, and the number of confirmed cases of infection with a new coronavirus in the country approached 48,000. The government expects an outbreak peak in 7-10 days.
