(ORDO NEWS) — Electric cars have helped their owners save on electricity. This is reported by Business Insider.
The journalists refer to the Synapse Energy Economics study funded by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).
The organization’s specialists found that in the long term, electric cars not only helped to reduce their own carbon footprint, but also lower utility bills for their owners.
The researchers looked at data from three California utilities that serve many households with electric vehicles about 735,000 at the end of 2021.
According to statistics, owners of electric vehicles began to pay less for electricity after purchasing a vehicle. In total, electric car owners saved $1.7 billion between 2012 and 2021.
The authors of the report explained that in the US, energy companies can recoup excess profits in the form of subsidies and tariff rebates.
It turned out that the owners of electric vehicles, as a rule, put their cars on charge at night and do not load the power grid during the peak period – in the morning and in the evening.
According to the authors of the study, with increased load, utilities are forced to expand the network and invest in the construction of power plants.
However, in the case of a conscious use of energy by consumers, companies are ready to make a discount to their customers.
