(ORDO NEWS) — Everyone can see the consequences of global warming: fires, floods and, of course, rising temperatures. And in order to look at the picture in general and be horrified by the speed of climate change, scientists have created a visual animation.
Climatologists believe that people should understand and remember the results of scientists well, complex charts will not help in the fight against global warming
Spiral infographic of global temperatures covers the period from 1880 to 2021. The animation is based on NASA GISS surface temperature analysis data and was developed by climate scientist Ed Hawkins.
Hawkins, who works at the University of Reading in the UK, believes that climate data should be presented in a way that is easy for anyone to understand and remember.
In 2016, his first “climate spiral” went viral. A simple animation showed how the current climate crisis is growing rapidly and frighteningly. This infographic was even used at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
New animation
This year, Hawkins updated his spiral by expanding it. One circle represents one year, and each division in the circle represents a month of the year. The thin line rotates within the recorded temperatures, showing how the values deviate from the norm over time.
As the years “accumulate”, the line begins to come out, creating something like a tornado. At the turn of the century, the belt is advancing at an alarming rate. Between 2016 and 2021, it crosses the yellow border several times, which represents one degree of warming.
