US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — The American drug Simeprevir, which was created several years ago for the treatment of hepatitis C, can not only inhibit the reproduction of coronavirus, but also increase the effectiveness of the antiviral drug remdesivir. This statement was made by a group of doctors from Hong Kong, led by Michael Chan.
The researchers said that the drugs complement each other perfectly, so they can not be taken in such large quantities for the treatment of coronavirus. Also, the advantage is that if the virus develops resistance to one of the drugs, then the second will still continue to act.
During their study, experts treated the cells with 11 different antiviral drugs, which are used not only in the United States, but also in other countries to eliminate various infections.
They monitored how viral particles behaved and how drugs influenced cell viability. Only simeprevir was able to suppress the reproduction of the virus and almost never kill the cells from all drugs. The following experiment demonstrated that the mixture obtained from remdesivir and simeprevir is more effective and does not negatively affect healthy cells.
Specialists are going to conduct a series of studies to understand how the drug affects the virus. They will try to create something similar for the treatment of coronavirus, but not so toxic to liver cells.
It is worth paying attention to the fact that lately, biologists have managed to find a huge number of drugs that can to some extent suppress the reproduction of coronavirus, but only some of them showed really good results. The most effective medications were against influenza, hepatitis C and Ebola.
