Doctor who recovered from Covid-19 only smells unpleasant
(ORDO NEWS) — As you know, many people after infection with coronavirus lose their sense of smell, it returns only after recovery. The case of Dr. Douglas Dietrich is unique: a man has had the disease, but still cannot smell normally. The doctor picks up only unpleasant odors.
Douglas Dietrich is a hepatologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. The infection took place in March, now the doctor’s office is almost normal. The recovery of the body began after several weeks of intensive therapy. One day a man in the ward took off his shoes and smelled an unpleasant smell. He was glad that his sense of smell had finally returned, but that was not the case.
The doctor still did not smell the scent of the oranges on the nightstand.
It was only after visiting a neurologist that Douglas realized what was going on. As it turned out, humans have two channels for odors: one for unpleasant and one for pleasant aromas.
The virus affects either the olfactory nerve, which is responsible for capturing odors, or the cells around this nerve. Smell and taste are closely intertwined: without capturing the smell, it is impossible to distinguish between tastes. You can only separate salty from sweet, etc. Now Douglas is looking forward to when his body is fully restored.
