(ORDO NEWS) — An international team of scientists has found that the exoplanet around the star 40 Eridani A, also known by the unofficial name of Vulcan, does not actually exist.
In the new paper, the researchers analyzed a list of exoplanets that NASA is considering as potential objects for closer study.
They found evidence that the identification of 40 Erib as a planet was false and that no such object actually exists in orbit around 40 Eridani A.
Exoplanet candidate 40 Erib was discovered by measuring the radial velocity from the wavelengths of light emitted by the star 40 Eridani A, about 16 light-years away.
This method is based on the fact that the rotation of a large planet creates an angular momentum of the star, which can be determined from the Doppler effect.
However, the researchers found that the observed effect is actually related to activity on the surface of the star and is not evidence of the existence of an exoplanet.
