(ORDO NEWS) — A group of specialists from the British University of Reading in their scientific work found that against the backdrop of global warming, turbulence is exacerbated, which is an additional danger to aircraft.
It is noted that clear-air turbulence (CAT) usually develops in the cloudless upper atmosphere and is not detected by airborne radars or visual surveillance equipment.
As a result of prolonged exposure to this type of turbulence, the life of aircraft is reduced, and its intense impact can lead to breakage of the sides.
Climate modeling by scientists has shown that for every degree Celsius of near-surface warming, the number of moderate turbulence events in clear skies will increase by 14% in summer and 9% in winter and spring.
The researchers explained that moderate turbulence is expressed as atmospheric conditions that provoke vertical acceleration of up to 0.5 g.
According to experts, one of the possible options for airlines to combat the impact of this type of turbulence is to avoid areas where CAT is formed.
Experts emphasize that this may lead to additional fuel costs and increase the time of transatlantic flights. In addition, scientists recommend that passengers fasten their seat belts to avoid serious injury and injury.
