US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — The number of coronavirus deaths officially recorded in 24 hours in Italy (525) is the lowest in more than two weeks, civil protection announced on Sunday.
This represents a decrease of a quarter of deaths compared to Saturday (681). We have to go back to March 19 to find a weaker balance (427).
Nearly 16,000 people died of Covid-19 in Italy, the world‘s most bereaved country, according to official figures.
“The curve has started to descend,” said the boss of the Higher Institute of Health, Silvio Brusaferro. The drop in the death toll “is a very important fact,” he said.
“If these data are confirmed, we will have to think about phase 2” of Italy’s restart plan, which provides for a resumption of part of the productive activity of the third European economy.
This phase 2 has been described by the authorities as a period of “cohabitation” with the virus.
These results are “conquered day by day and it is important to maintain the measures that made the curve decrease,” he said, however.
For almost four weeks, the 60 million Italians have been subjected to a strict attack on their freedoms, with a ban on rallies, drastic limitation of travel and considerable slowdown in economic activity.
As a sign that the battle is not yet won, the Italian health services have recorded nearly 3,000 additional infected people in the last 24 hours.
