(ORDO NEWS) — An Indian man pronounced dead after a road accident shocked his relatives when they found he was still breathing despite spending a night in the freezer of a hospital morgue.
Shrikesh Kumar was admitted to the hospital in critical condition after being hit by a motorcycle in Moradabad, east of the capital New Delhi.
He was taken to a private medical facility, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival and then transported him to a government hospital for an autopsy on Friday.
“An ambulance officer examined him. He showed no signs of life and therefore pronounced him dead,” Rajendra Kumar, the hospital’s chief physician, told AFP on Sunday.
The doctor said the police were informed and the body was placed in a morgue freezer until his family arrived six hours later.
“When the police team and his family came to start the autopsy paperwork, he was found alive,” he added.
Rajendra Kumar said the 45-year-old patient is undergoing further treatment but is still in a coma.
“This is nothing short of a miracle,” he added.
Investigations are under way to find out how doctors wrongly declared him dead.
