Dead man became the first intestine donor for a living person

(ORDO NEWS) — A group of scientists from the Spanish University Hospital La Paz in Madrid performed a highly unusual operation. As part of it, for the first time in history, the intestines of a dead man were transplanted into a living person.

The patient who needed surgery was a 13-month-old girl. She was diagnosed with intestinal failure from the very first month of life, as a result of which the only option was surgery.

It is worth noting that, until now, such surgical procedures with an organ from an asystolic donor have never been successful. But this time, the problems bypassed the doctors.

It is reported that the girl has already been discharged from the hospital. At the moment, her condition is described as good.

Recall that back in July 2022, American specialists transplanted the heart of a genetically modified pig into a 72-year-old man. True, then it was about a patient who died of brain death.
