(ORDO NEWS) — The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, intends to develop a new vertical takeoff and landing vehicle.

Known as Advanced AirCraft Infrastructure-Less Launch And RecoverY X-Plane or ANCILLARY, the program aims to develop an aircraft that can land and take off in areas without pre-existing air bases or other infrastructure, operate in adverse weather conditions, and even deploy from decks of naval ships without specialized equipment for launching and landing.

DARPA has not said whether the aircraft will be a drone or be capable of carrying a crew, but the video released by the agency shows pilots using a tablet to control the aircraft, implying a remotely piloted or autonomous aircraft.

The ANCILLARY program aims to develop a vehicle that is lightweight, capable of carrying a large payload and staying airborne for long periods of time.

The agency issued a notice inviting professionals from relevant industries and technology manufacturing organizations to participate in the design and construction of the latest machine.
