US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Astronomers participating in the Virtual Telescope project captured a large asteroid (52768) 1998 OR2, which will approach the Earth on April 29, according to the portal Space.com.
NASA attributed this celestial body, which is 1.8-4.1 kilometers in diameter, to “potentially dangerous” objects for our planet, since its flight route crosses the earth’s orbit.
However, according to scientists, on the day of its closest approach to Earth, the asteroid will be at a distance of 6.3 million kilometers from us – this is 16 times the distance to the moon.
The next time, 1998, OR2 will approach the Earth in 2031. The asteroid will approach a distance of about 19 million kilometers.
