(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists are confident that Omicron will not be the last strain of coronavirus. The pandemic will continue.
The following variants of the virus can be incredibly infectious and dangerous. In addition, scientists note that a strain with a high mortality rate may appear. Similar conclusions were made by British experts.
For example, epidemiologist Mark Woolhouse, who works at the University of Edinburgh, said that the assumption that new variants of the coronavirus will be weaker is very dangerous.
Omicron did not originate from Delta. It came from a completely different part of the family tree of this virus. Just as scientists have no idea where exactly the next strain might come from, they also cannot know about its level of pathogenicity.
Many virologists believe that after Omicron there will be a huge number of new variants of the disease. David Nabarro, WHO spokesman, agrees that the mutation can be unpredictable, so it’s impossible to say now that future strains of coronavirus will not bring even more harm to humanity.
Everyone at the WHO agrees that as of today, the pandemic does not even think of ending. The organization expects the next variants of the virus to appear soon.
At the same time, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed during his New Year’s address that the pandemic will end in 2022.
This requires that as many people as possible be vaccinated to build herd immunity. In addition, everything possible must be done to eliminate the injustice that has arisen during the distribution of vaccines between different countries.
