(ORDO NEWS) — In the US state of Louisiana, the coast guard rescued three sailors who fought off sharks with their bare hands all day after their boat sank. It is reported by the Sun Herald.
A fishing boat with a crew of three was wrecked on the high seas. After relatives of the victims reported their disappearance, the Coast Guard organized a search.
Local yachtsmen helped rescuers establish the coordinates of the shipwreck. A helicopter was sent to the disaster area and found a seven-meter boat, which sank 40 kilometers from the coast.
His crew survived and stayed in the water all day. All this time, the fishermen had to fight off the sharks that attacked them.
The two men were taken aboard the rescue yacht. The third sailor was lifted out of the water by a helicopter.
The victims were taken to the University Medical Center in New Orleans. Their condition is assessed as stable.
Two rescued had shark bite wounds on their arms, one of them showed signs of hypothermia. The life jacket of one of the passengers of the boat was torn apart by a shark.
“If the relatives had not turned to the coast guard, and if the victims had not been wearing life jackets, everything could have ended much worse.
We appreciate the help of the yachtsmen who helped us establish the possible location where the boat with these men on board was in distress, ”the Coast Guard said.
