(ORDO NEWS) — The Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari is the world’s thinnest mechanical watch, measuring just 1.75mm thick. But despite the fact that their case may be miniscule, its price tag is a whopping $1.88 million.
If you’re not a watch lover, you probably don’t know that watchmakers are constantly competing to create the thinnest mechanical wristwatches in the world.
In 2018, the world record was set by the Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept with a thickness of 2 mm. Earlier this year, Bulgari introduced the Octo Finissimo Ultra, a mechanical marvel just 1.8mm thick.
However, their dominance was short-lived, as the Swiss watch manufacturer Richard Mille, together with Ferrari, created an even thinner mechanical watch RM UP-01 Ferrari, only 1.75 millimeters thick.
Crafted from grade 5 titanium and powered by an ultra-thin movement, the Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari watch pushes the boundaries of mechanical timekeeping even further.
Developed in collaboration with watchmakers Audemars Piguet and Renaud & Papi, the internal movement is just 1.18mm thick.
The design of the new thinnest mechanical wristwatch in the world is not traditional: the time is displayed by a very small dial in the center of the upper half of the watch, and a circle next to it allows you to see the balance. The two smaller circles on the left side of the clock are used to access the movement.
The Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferraris are water resistant to 10 meters and are reported to withstand over 5,000 Gs of acceleration. They provide users with a 45-hour power reserve when combined with a higher 4Hz frequency.
The watch is thinner than the rubber strap it comes with. They are also incredibly light as the internal mechanism only weighs 2.82 grams.
Richard Mille claims that more than 6,000 man-hours have gone into developing the world’s thinnest new mechanical wristwatch, including the creation of a titanium balancer, a unique escapement, and a safety roller to transfer energy to the balancer.
Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari is a limited edition mechanical watch. Only 150 units will be produced, each selling for $1,888,000.
