Coronavirus found in patients sperm

US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Doctors discovered SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in infected seminal fluid. Perhaps it is transmitted sexually.

Details are set out in a scientific article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Scientists examined semen samples from 38 men with COVID-19. And in 6 patients (i.e., 16% of the subjects), SARS-CoV-2 was detected in the samples. Coronavirus was found in the seminal fluid of four out of 15 patients in the acute phase of the disease, and, most surprisingly, two out of 23 men who had recovered.

Researchers emphasize that it is too early to talk about whether the infection is transmitted through sexual contact. It is difficult to say whether the concentration of viral particles in semen reaches the desired level. It is also unknown whether these particles are active, whether they are able to invade the cell. Nevertheless, such an opportunity cannot be ruled out.

It is unlikely that anyone will want to have sex with a person who is ill with COVID-19. But the presence of the virus in the semen of the newly recovered shows that the patient who has successfully passed this infection should be careful for some time.

It is not yet clear why the virus was detected in the seed of some men, but not in the semen of others. Doctors compared the age of those and other subjects, as well as the time from the onset of the first symptoms, the period after recovery and the history of urological diseases, but did not find any pattern.

As informs agency Reuters The , on small samples failed to detect the coronavirus in the semen of patients in previous studies.

By the way, earlier Vesti.Nauka (nauka.vesti.ru) talked about how a pathogen can spread through feces , as well as how long it lasts on various surfaces.

Nevertheless, the main source of infection remains particles of saliva and nasal mucus that enter the air when talking, coughing and sneezing.
