US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — In Italy, 2886 people became infected with the coronavirus per day, 681 died, said the head of the country’s civil defense Angelo Borrelli.
At the same time, the death toll per day from coronavirus in Italy increased by 681 to 15,362, he stressed. The total number of COVID-19 infections in Italy has reached 124.6 thousand cases.
On Friday, 760 deaths were recorded, a day earlier – 766.
“The total number of people infected has reached 88,274, compared with yesterday it grew by 2,889,” Borrelli said at a traditional briefing on Friday.
In addition, according to data provided by Borrelli, for the first time since the outbreak of the epidemic in the intensive care wards in Italy, the number of patients has decreased.
“This is the most important news, because it allows our hospitals to breathe. This is the first negative value since the emergency,” said the head of the civil defense service.
On Friday, 2339 new infections were reported. Last week, the growth of new cases did not fall below 3.5 thousand per day. On Monday, there was a sharp decline in 1,648 new cases – such a small increase in new infections has not been recorded since March 10.
“The number of people recovered reached 20996, during the day the growth was 1238 people,” the head of the civil defense service added. On Friday, 1,480 people recovered.
According to Borrelli, the total number of cases of infection, including those who died and recovered, reached 124,632. On Thursday, the same indicator was 119,827 people.
“Unfortunately, we are registering 681 deaths. This figure is constantly decreasing. On March 26, we reached a maximum with almost 1 thousand victims,” Borrelli said.
As Francesco Locatelli, President of the Supreme Council of the Ministry of Health, said at a press conference, “the critical phase has not yet been overcome.” “We were not saved from danger, not yet from anything,” the specialist said.
Silvio Brusaferro, president of the Higher Institute of Health (ISS), said earlier on Friday that recent epidemiological evidence confirms a trend to slow the spread of coronavirus in Italy.
