(ORDO NEWS) — Norwegian shipping company Ulstein has unveiled a new concept ship that will be able to cruise with zero CO2 emissions. It uses a molten salt thorium reactor as a power plant.
The concept ship called Ulstein Thor with a reactor on board will not need to be refueled. The principle of operation of a thorium reactor is to dissolve thorium in a liquid salt, a metal widely distributed in nature with low radioactivity.
The subsequent chain reaction gradually heats up the salt, resulting in steam that drives a turbine to generate electricity.
