Coffee consumption has been linked to a decrease in body fat
US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Specialists from the University of England Raskin (Great Britain) concluded that women who drink two or three cups of coffee per day accumulate less fat in the body. The results of the study are published in the Journal of Nutrition.
After examining the results of the National Health and Nutrition Survey, organized by the US Centers for Disease Control, experts found a correlation between the amount of coffee consumed and the level of body fat. It turned out that women aged 20–44 years who drank two or three cups of coffee a day had the lowest level of obesity.
The difference with the data of women who did not drink coffee at all was 3.4%. Among women aged 45 to 69, the percentage of obesity in those who drank four or more cups of coffee, the level of obesity was 4.1% lower. The average difference in the level of obesity between women who drank two or three cups of coffee per day and those who did not drink coffee was 2.8%.
For men, this relationship was less significant, although men aged 20–44 who drank two or three cups a day had 1.3% less total fat and 1.8% less visceral fat.
“Our study suggests that coffee may contain biologically active compounds other than caffeine that regulate weight, and can potentially be used as anti-obesity agents,” – said one of the study’s authors Lee Smith.
