Chinese scientists say the likelihood of female infertility due to coronavirus

US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Scientists from China published a scientific paper in which they said that coronavirus can infect female reproductive organs. Thus, SARS-CoV-2 is potentially capable of leading to infertility, the authors of the article say.

Russian experts point out that many viruses are known to cause fertility problems. However, for SARS-CoV-2, this is only a hypothesis. It is necessary to monitor the health of ill women, as well as pregnant women, in order to draw more accurate conclusions, they noted.

In early May, scientists from the Department of Physiology of Jining Medical University published an article that presented data on the possible effect of coronavirus infection on the reproductive system of women.

In their opinion, the pathogen can penetrate into the organs of the genitourinary system, due to the fact that ACE 2 receptors, which are the entrance gate to the coronavirus, are present in large numbers on their cells. Through them, the infection enters the cells of the body.

As stated in the article, science has already provided a lot of data on the presence of this protein in the liver, kidneys, central nervous system, and not just in the lungs. However, data on the female reproductive system are still extremely scarce.
