Chinese epidemiologist warns that country may face second wave of COVID-19

US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — A senior medical adviser to the PRC warned that China will soon face a second wave of coronavirus infection due to a lack of immunity in the population.

After months of isolation and restrictions on movement, China has largely taken control of the virus, but fears of the second wave have intensified as some foci of infection arose in the northeastern provinces and in Wuhan.

“Most … Chinese are currently still susceptible to COVID-19 infection due to lack of immunity,” Zhong Nanshan told CNN.

“We are facing a big problem,” Zhong added. “Our situation is no better than in other countries, I think at the moment.”

Zhong, who helped identify the scale of the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003, also stated that authorities in Wuhan, where the epidemic was at an epicenter, posted underestimated cases in the early days of the pandemic.

But he added that he believes that the data released after Wuhan was blocked in late January, and when the central government took control of the situation, “were correct.”

The new coronavirus killed at least 309,296 people, according to official estimates, scientists around the world are keen to create a vaccine.

Zhong warned that creating an “ideal” vaccine for a disease that the World Health Organization (WHO) may never disappear could take “years.”
