US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — China is ready to take a series of countermeasures against US companies in response to plans to block the supply of semiconductors to Chinese telecommunications company Huawei. US tech companies may be included in the list of “unreliable organizations”, investigations and restrictions on American companies such as Apple, Cisco, Qualcomm, and the suspension of the purchase of Boeing aircraft may begin, a source close to the Chinese government told Global Times.
The Global Times is published by the official newspaper of the ruling Chinese Communist Party, People‘s Daily. Although the Global Times is not an official mouthpiece of the party, its views are believed to reflect those of its leaders.
On Friday, the US Department of Commerce announced that it was amending export rules to limit the supply of Chinese Huawei to “semiconductor products that developed some US technology and software.”
In response, China will take decisive countermeasures to protect its legitimate rights if the US intends to ban major chip suppliers, including the Taiwanese TSMC, from selling chips to the Chinese tech giant, The Global Times said.
Measures include adding US companies to China’s list of “unreliable organizations”, introducing restrictions or initiating investigations of US companies in accordance with Chinese laws and regulations (cyber security review measures and antitrust laws), as well as suspending the purchase of aircraft from Boeing, a source said .
Mentioned US companies, including Apple, Qualcomm, Cisco and Boeing, are heavily dependent on the Chinese market.
China’s Ministry of Commerce announced last May that China would release its own list targeting foreign companies that seriously undermine the legitimate interests of Chinese companies.
The list of “unreliable companies” will include foreign organizations, individuals and companies that block or block supply chains, or take discriminatory measures for non-commercial reasons, and when their actions jeopardize the business of Chinese companies, as well as global consumers and companies, said Gao Feng, spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Trade, at a 2019 press conference.
The list will also include foreign companies that cause actual or potential damage to Chinese companies and industries. The threat or potential threat to China’s national security is also a reason to be listed, said Zhi Luxun, head of the Industrial, Security, Import and Export Control Bureau in June 2019.
It is assumed that as soon as the company is listed, it will face the necessary legal and administrative measures, and the Chinese public will also be warned that it should not be dealt with in order to reduce risks.
